Surface Preparation: 1. Load 3/4” Flat Brush with Basil Green. Apply basecoat, allow to dry.
2. Reapply color if necessary. Allow to dry.
Painting Instructions:
1. Open Rose – Refer to the Flower Petals Worksheet (1011AWKSHT) for brush stroke practice before painting. Double load the No. 12 Flat Brush with Magenta and AP Yellow Light. Blend on the palette to soften the color. Add a touch of Wicker White to the AP Yellow Light side of the double loaded brush.
2. Paint the outer skirt of the “wiggle” rose petals first. Touch the surface with Wicker White towards the outside of each petal, apply pressure and begin wiggling the stroke upwards and back down as shown with arrows on the worksheet. Continue painting the same stroke connecting petals to form the outer skirt of the “wiggle” strokes from the back or first layer of rose petals.
3. Add the inner skirt of rose petals painting two additional rows of wiggle petal strokes.
4. Load the 1/2" Scruffy Brush with AP Yellow Light and Thicket. Paint the open rose center by pouncing the color into the center keeping Thicket to the left side and AP Yellow Light to the right.
5. Load the handle end of the No. 2 Script Liner Brush with Wicker White and paint small dots around the right side of the center circle. Add Thicket dots to the left side.
6. You may choose to paint a partial or side view of an open rose; painting the wiggle rose petals the same keeping the Yellow Light side of the brush outwards.
7. Rosebuds – Refer to Flower Petals Worksheet (1011AWKSHT). Double load the No. 12 Flat Brush with AP Yellow Light and Magenta. Blend on the palette; add Wicker White to the AP Yellow Light side of the brush.
8. Begin painting each rosebud at the center; painting “C” strokes keeping Wicker White to the top of each stroke. Begin on the chisel edge of the brush, apply pressure as you move the brush upward and over in an arch shape, lift back to the chisel edge.
9. Close the bud by painting a “U” stroke in front of the stroke just painted, keeping Wicker White to the top of each stroke.
10. Add additional “U” strokes and comma strokes to fill in a few more petals. NOTE: This design incorporates four rosebuds; however, you may change the desired amount of rosebuds.
11. Wiggle Leaves – Refer to Leaf Strokes Worksheet (1011BWKSHT) for brush stroke practice before painting directing on your project. Double load the No. 12 Flat Brush with Thicket and AP Yellow Light. Blend on the palette to soften the color. Paint a large “wiggle” leaf at the base of the open rose. Begin on the chisel edge, touch the surface, apply pressure and wiggle, release pressure and lift at the tip of the leaf. NOTE: Keep Thicket to the center of the wiggle leaf and add as many wiggle leaves as desired.
12. Leaves – Still working with the same double loaded No. 12 Flat Brush paint several basic One Stroke leaves around the design elements. Beginning on the chisel edge of the brush touch the surface, apply pressure, pull and lift back to the chisel edge of the brush creating the tip of the leaf.
13. Five Petal Blossoms – Refer to the Flower Petals Worksheet (1011AWKSHT) for brush stroke practice before painting. Double load the No. 12 Flat Brush with Wicker White and a tiny touch of Thicket. Blend on the palette to soften the color. Paint a tear drop stroke creating a petal. Paint four more petals connecting them. NOTE: If it helps to place the five petals appropriately, think of a gingerbread man; begin with the head, then paint two arms and two legs! Paint several blossoms and half blossoms. Refer to photo for placement.
14. Blossom Center – Load the handle end of the No. 2 Script Liner Brush with AP Yellow Light and paint several yellow dots in the flower center. Add Wicker White dots as highlights.
15. Ribbon – Double load the No. 12 Flat Brush with Wicker White and a touch of Thicket. Blend to soften, paint sections of ribbon gracefully flowing throughout the floral design. Simply touch on the chisel edge, apply pressure, pull, release pressure and lift back to the chisel edge. Refer to project photo.
Finishing Touches –
1. Don’t forget to sign your name in the color desired with thinned paint using the No. 2 Script Liner Brush.
2. When dry if desired, apply a couple coats of brush-on waterbase varnish or spray sealer in sheen of your choice. Enjoy!
